Suburban Overlander #5: Rear Hatch/Window Releases
The GMT800-era of Chevy Suburban has a lot of things to offer as an overlanding platform including a reliable, common as dirt drivetrain, generous interior space, and aftermarket upgrade suppliers.
But what Chevy designers didn't accomodate is the idea that someone was going to be in the rear cargo area and want to let themselves out. Or open the rear hatch window. You have to be outside the truck to do either of these.
But the fix is pretty simple.
With the rear hatch interior panels removed for sound deadening work, I decided this "while I'm at it" task was worth doing.
Sections of tie-down strap, conduit clamps, and zip ties all work together to actuate what needs to be actuated.
For the rear hatch release: sprinkler pipe handle, hand-sewn connections, cargo strap, conduit clamps, and zip ties all connect to where the outside handle connect.
Same idea but simpler on the window release.
There's plenty of clearance behind the door panel plastic.
I used my dremel and a hand file to make access points for the straps to exit. Also note Command-Strip hook to close the rear window.
