Rollcage

Some pics of SSDutch’s completed rollcage.  Brian of JCROffroad in Kalamazoo made some minor design changes, has added the overhead stringers, seatbelts are in place, and rear seat is now tied in.

Looks good.  Did you lose the use of your under-passenger seat tool box?  Pictures make it look like it can’t be opened now.

Also, does it tie into the frame, and if so can you include some pics?

Thanks

I can still use the tool box, due to it not being hinged - I just lift the lid out.

I didn’t have the cage tied into the frame - this is a matter of debate among Jeepers..wink

My position is that the frames on these old Jeeps are designed to flex - note how the frame isn’t welded or bolted together but held with large rivets that allow movement.

What happens when you tie a rollcage in is it creates one section that doesn’t flex, while the rest of the frame still does, which leads to frame cracks.  Same thing as when guys box part of the frame - where the boxing ends the frame will crack.

Granted you could probably design a body-to-frame tie in that allowed some give, but I felt with the seat and seatbelts integrated into the ‘cage I didn’t need to tie into the frame.  Worst case is cage and body seperation, and in that event we’ll be contained within the rollcage.

I also don’t tend to be a hardcore Jeeper - any trail-based roll will likely be a slow-speed roll.  I rolled my CJ5 in that fashion with just the normal 6-point cage not tied to the frame and it came out fine.  Nothing in the cage to body mount area even looked stressed.

Thanks Mike.

In my opinion, that’s sound logic concerning the cage to frame mounting.  The only caveat that I have is in the future I plan to go to a glass tub (unless I become independantly wealthy before then), and I will have to tie my cage to the frame, probably with some type of flexible connection.  Just looking for ideas.

Thanks again.

Jon
