False Start - 1958 CJ6

This was our first take on an SSDutch project, a 1958 CJ6.

What I’m liking is how solid the outer body is.  The floor isn’t pretty, but the floor in the current Dutch tub is solid, and that area is the same between a CJ5 and CJ6.

The seller is including some uncut fenders, a metal hood, and (hopefully, he’s gotta check) a ‘70/’71 windshield frame.  The seller is going to pull and keep the F134, radiator, trans, transfer case and driveshafts. I bought the rest, delivered from 300 miles away, for what I consider a very fair price.  The floor looks bad I know, but the floors in Dutch are solid there as Dad redid them with galvanized years ago—I’m hoping I can cut that section out of Dutch and graft it into SSDutch.

Old Jeeps are pretty light without drivetrains or interiors or rollcages or tops…

Sure don’t find them holding together this well in Michigan.  The seller picked this one up 75 miles outside of Atlanta, GA.

He kept the original drivetrain, which saved me from having to pull it and sell it.

Upon inspection, it looks like I’ll be completely replacing the floor.  It’s been repaired once, and it’ll probably be easier to just cut it out and start over.

I have big plans for the extra space in front of the wheelwells…

Gotta love the home-made shackle lift:

Looks like I gained a set of drive flanges - no lockouts ever installed!  Gained a set of original wheels too, I might paint these up and mount a smaller set of tires for winter use.

Underneath now, there’s an additional piece of strap metal on the lower edge of the frame - I’m wondering if that’s original to strenghen the longer CJ6 frame?

“Needs a floor.” Nuff said?

The body will need some work - looks like a bit of bondo on the drivers side cowl.  Nothing major though.

Typical frame crack up front:

Dash is relatively uncut.

Must be the 4 cyl battery tray?  Not familiar with it.  And yes, that’s the body tied down to the frame…

Part of the deal was a post-1969-ish windshield frame with bottom mount wipers and external motor.  The seller brought two, one has a working motor and the other has better sheet metal.  I like the idea of the visors, and might pursue finding a nice set of those to install.

I measured this glass against the windshield glass that Dutch had, and theres just about 2” more height on these.  That’s going to make a ton of difference in visiblity for me, since I usually look out the top 1” of windshield in Dutch.

The rest of the body parts.  The seller included 2 sets of fenders - one set (the gray ones)is nicer on the outside but rusted where they attach to the grille.  The other set is nicer on the inside, but the passenger side fender has the later-model marker light indent that I’d like to avoid.

Am I right in thinking this is a shovel bracket?

Front brakelines are different from my ‘66.  Rather than hardline on the frame with 2 flex hoses to the brakes, the ‘58 has the hardline on the axle, with 3 softlines - one in the middle and one for each wheel:

Old and new!

7.31.2004 1958 CJ6 Is Sold
After deciding to purchase a 1964 CJ6 off eBay with the 4.3 Chevy and T18 already swapped in, the 1958 CJ6 is sold.

She heads first to Silver Lake to get a view of her future, then back to IL for a buildup.  She leaves us wearing Samari shoes...wink Jeep loading pictures by Harrison.

A sad sight - sorta.  There’s never NOT been a Jeep living in this spot in the garage since we’ve lived here:

Although it is nice to have 2 garage spaces for 2 cars, it still doesn’t seem right seeing a non-Jeep over there.

Battery tray is the norm for earlier CJ-5’s.  Moved to the firewall sometime in the mid 60’s.

Yes, that’s a shovel bracket too methinks.  M38A1 hood?

Could be.  But remember this is a ‘58...could be a carryover yet?  Hoping I can use it with the 4.3 in there...I think it’s kinda cool.

I don’t think those are Jeep wheels Mike.  Maybe Ford?  Not sure, just not like ones I’ve had.

Yep.  Battery tray is in the right spot for my ‘65 with the F-head.  Wheels look original too.

Hmmm...the wheels are identical to what I have on the Bantam...and I *think* like what I used to have for Dutch.

Found a pic of the shovel mount in use.  Not sure I’ll be able to use it - thinking that it might interfere with my brake master cylinder:

Looking at the space in front of those wheel wells… I know you’re a long ways away, but can you sense the jealousy. smile

Congrats!  Have fun swapping parts.

They used that battery tray for the 4 cyl and the firewall mounted one on the 6’s.  I “should” be out of the way enough for the new engine.  I’ll let you know how much it sticks out past the radiator if I get a chance.

the hood could also be from a M170

The strap on the bottom of the frame rail is standard for the CJ6, and its forerunner, the M170.

It is a common modificaiton to early CJ5s for trail use, and is also standard on all of the FC150s I have seen.
