Wanting a rear mounted gas tank necessitated some exhaust work, since the stock muffler on an early CJ mounts in the spot where the gas tank needs to go. Dual rear exit exhaust was the solution.
Note - this mod was done on our ‘66 CJ5, our ‘64 CJ6 has a quieter single exhaust setup. Yeah, I’m getting old…
There are headers available for the Buick V6, but they put the exhaust exit just under the door, right in front of the rear tire. I didn’t like the idea of stepping in and out through the exhaust, and also like to be able to do tune-ups in the garage with the running Jeep pushed back to the edge of the garage letting the exhaust spit outside.
So I had a shop run dual exhaust using the stock manifolds. The exhaust exits normally, then comes under the frame just behind the front tires, then runs along the frame all the way back. Mufflers are small turbo units, from a Firebird or Camaro as I recall the shop owner saying. Sounds nice - low rumble at idle but a little throaty at 3K on the tach.
Exhaust clearance with suspension bottomed and maxxed out. Right front tire elevated, picture shows left rear “squished”. Note that rear shocks are mounted upside down for clearance.

Thanks. Exactly what I needed to see. Don’t know how those mufflers will sound with the F-head but that’s the route I need to take.

FYI the underseat tank is fairly new. It will make a good replacement for someone. Also I had to replace the plastic float for the fuel guage twice. A ford brass one fits right in and lasted. With the old 2bbl carb my gas milage wastn’t the best and extra fuel would have helped. When you get new FI I’d be interested in what your mileage is…
