Does “Rare” Mean “More Valuable”?

I am pretty firm on my price due to the rarity of this Jeep.

This subject seems to come up quite a bit regarding CJ6’s, so I thought I would throw it out there for those of you who peruse this site.

Yes - CJ6’s are “rare” - with something around 50K units made over the roughly 20 year production run.  Every eBay and Craigslist seller seems to have figured this out.  But does that make them more valuable than a CJ5 of roughly the same year, condition, and configuration?

From what I’ve seen (and I haven’t been doing heavy analysis, just casual) the fact that a given Jeep is a CJ6 model doesn’t add a huge premium onto the market price it fetches.  Some of this is due to the relative obscurity of the model (though my gut feeling is that the internet is slowly changing that as even in the later Jeep forums there always seems to be someone who knows what a 6 is vs. the continued confusion with the Scrambler).  Some of it might be due to the comments I’ve seen that the CJ6 is “ugly” or “awkward” looking.  Some of it might be due to the fact that the CJ6 isn’t really that different - it’s not going to catch that much more attention going down the road.

And - let’s face it, rarity just doesn’t always equal value.  Sometimes the reason something is “rare” now is that it was never that popular to begin with.  I know if our ‘66 Rambler Classic had been a ‘66 Chevelle or ‘66 Galaxy I’d have gotten at least 2X the price for it when I sold it.

CJ6 owners speak up - do you think the 6 is more valuable than a CJ5?

Value is always tied to what the next guy will pay for it.  I could have a single edition Porsche that Ferdinand built himself that I think is worth $50M, but if someone will only cough up $2M, that is all it is worth.

Rarity, does seem to add value.  But only to collectors.  If you collect beanie babies, and the early possum is what your are after, but it was rare because it was so ugly no one ever bought it, then it would be very valuable in order complete a collection. (Fictional, of course)

So while it does add a bit of value, I don’t think a 6 of comparable condition to a 5 is worth more than a 5% premium.  Add that to the fact that since most are in terrible shape, it’s not really a collectable item.  I really want one, but like you have seen the market for them seem to be in the clouds.  But everyone puts Rare in their auctions so that they can get another dollar or two.  Like I said, I would pay a 5% premium for a 6, but not double or more that some people think they are worth.
