CJ6 or M170?

Here’s a Jeep up for auction that does a good job of showing how the interchangeability of old Jeep parts can lead to a confusing vehicle 50 years later.

The auction lists this Jeep as a CJ6, but there are a number of clues pointing to it actually being an M170.

First, we have a split windshield.  These were available on civilian Jeeps as well, though, so that in itself isn’t conclusive:

Passenger side, where an M170 had a larger, square-ish door opening and placed the spare tire just inside/ to the rear.  Note the lack of the “body seam”, and some extra sheet metal hanging down:

Moving inside, note the longer wheelhouse on the driver’s side with storage lid:

View towards the front, note the military gauge arrangement on the dash.

And the glovebox door to the left of the steering wheel:

Add in the Commando front clip, and Bronco drivetrain and you’ve got quite a FrankenJeep going here, but it still could be cool.

Hello,
I bought this CJ6/M170 off Ebay last year, and it currently awaits resto-modification (as much “resto” and relatively minor “mod” as possible considering I don’t really know what it is, and it has no frame or identifying markings whatsoever!)  It definitely has aspects of both the CJ6 and M170, as you point out in the pictures.

I suspect it’s sort of a “missing link” between the CJ6 and M170.  I think its an early prototype of the CJ6, based on the M170, which was released in 1954, a year before the CJ6.  It has all the toolboxes and the cowl storage cover of the M170, but the right door is stock (but was severely damaged and heavily Bondo’d by a previous owner, hence the missing body seam).  Also, the electrical plug on the M170 (similar to the M38A1, in front of the pass. door) is not present, and has not been removed, as there are no scars.

Anyway, this is a great site, thanks for all the hard work!  I visit when I can to get ideas on how to set up my Frankenjeep when it comes time…
