1974 CJ6 Owned By Trey Garrett

Wow - more CJ6 owners coming out of the woodwork!  Trey Garrett of Mississippi sends in pictures of his ‘74 CJ6 affectionately named “Dung Beetle”  - more for the “soft bed liner brown coating all over it” than (what I hope to be) mud in the above pic.

Trey’s 6 features a YJ 4” spring lift, and an Aussie locker.  For more clean and dirty pics,

I like the roll bar the way he has it.  Same as a CJ5 in relation to the front seats.  Simple.

Simple, but unfortunately it doesn’t help me get into the dunes without the kids wearing helmets…gotta have a bar above and behind their heads.

Yes I’m with you on the roll cage.  We are planning a cage like Terry Howe has.

I have added two jump seats out of a xtra cab Ford Range so that I can seat 6.  I have three boys and another baby on the way so I am in a hurry to get the cage completed.  I will send pictures when it is finished.

Just finished a big renovation on the “Dung Beetle”.  We installed a 4.3L Vortec, SM465 Tranny, and NP205 Tcase.  This was one of the easiest swaps that I have ever done.  Everything fit perfect with only minor modifications.  I only lost 1” of ground clearance but more than double my crawl ratio.

Hi Orland…

Thanks for the message - I’d be happy to post pics of your CJ6.  Sent them to .

Trey - any progress on the rollcage?

No progress on the roll cage yet.  Ran out of money doing the drive train swap. I put the wheel spacers on last night and finished bleeding the brakes.  Wow what a difference power steering makes.  Tax return money should be in in about 2 weeks so that will go toward roll cage, seats, and harness.  Hey Orlando thanks for the post.  I sent you a message.

1996 Corvett LT1/700r4/dana300

Mint condition.  Completey restored from the frame up.  I will work on pictures this weekend when I am actually home during the daylight hours.  We are really busy down here with Hurricane recovery every spare minute of the day.  The jeep comes in handy.  Keep the Gulfcoast in your prayers as there is still a long way to go to get this place back to normal.

Just like CJ5’s, post ‘71 models have ~3.5” more in the engine compartment to accomodate the AMC I6.

I have the GM 4.3 in my ‘66 CJ6, and plenty of old Jeeps have seen the 350 Chevy installed.

None outside the normal ones that go into an engine swap into an old Jeep….;)

Not that I can say much, I bought mine already done….

Yeh the 4.3 swap was the easiest swap I have ever done out of about 7-8 I have been a part of.  There is plenty of room and I am running the taurus fan without even trimming the shroud.  You woun’t have any trouble.  I am running 37” boggers and I have a set of 37” Krawlers for rocky days.

The engine is a 95 4.3l Vortec with 8.8 wires, High flow air filter, Taurus fan, Dual Flowmaster 50 2 1/2” Exhaust, SM465 tranny, NP205 Tcase, 44 rear w/ an Aussie Locker and 30 front w/ a detroit.  I have a set of J10 44’s with 5.38’s and lockers at the house but no time to install them.

Trey,
What type of finish is that on your Jeep? That is exactly what I am looking for to put on my 59 Willys CJ-5.

That is something like Reflex Liner.  The previous owner applied that stuff to the entire jeep.  Inside and out.  It is great on tight trails because you get no scratches and its soft on the kids.

I just swapped a 4.3 vortec out of a 94 S-10 Blazer and as you said it was relatively easy. I am stuck on two things though. One is it idles high in park. No codes just idles high. Once I put in drive it idles fine. weird. I would entertain any ideas you have here. 2nd I can’t figure out what to do about a air-cleaner. This seems to be the biggest puzzle. What did you do about your aircleaner. I would appreciate pics if possible.

Thanks, Mike
