New Year’s Tips - Domain Status and Copyright Dates
Hey Folks -
Two quick tips now that we’re into 2005. First, check your domains to see when the expiration date is. The place I registered Boyink.com through sends so much junk mail I missed a renewal notice (I’m guessing), but got lucky and checked it 1 month before it was set to expire. Hard to believe it was 5 years ago I registered that!
The other is your site copyright date - make sure you bump it to 2005. I hope you have that stored in an include file of some sort so that you need to only make the change in one spot.

Technically, I think the copyright date should be changed to reflect two years - the current year but also the year the first content was written. So for example, if I launched a site in 2003 (writing the first content in that year and perhaps taking the first photos in that year), then the copyright should read something like “Copyright 2003-2005, Frank Johnson.“
I’m not a lawyer, but do have some experience with intellectual property law. My recollection is that the copyright date establishes the date from which damages can be applied to violators, so that if we always change the date to the current year, we may minimize the amount of damages we can collect.
Again, not a lawyer, so take it for what it’s worth.
