Digital Web Magazine > Posting isn’t Enough!

“Make sure you can post regularly. Figure out your posting schedule. If you don’t have the ability to commit to a schedule, don’t commit to it then.” Full Post >>

Nick Finck from Digital Web is posting updates from the Blog Business Summit (BBS), a conference focused on learning how to make blogs work for business.

So far I haven’t heard anything too earth shattering - which is understandable given that blogs are just another communication tool. Any message going out of your company should know its audience and be targeted to them.

I do find the whole notion of a schedule for posting rather interesting.  Keith Robinson at Asterisk has written about it, as has web content guru Gerry McGovern.

I can’t imagine trying to schedule my posts here on Boyink.com.  Maybe I’m too reactive, just adding comments like these to content others have put on the web.  Maybe in our life of homeschooling and self employment the whole notion of a rigid, scheduled day has just gone out the window so it seems strange to then try to apply one here.

But my gut feeling is that if I tried to schedule updates here, I’d end up with posts that are “forced”, and only posted in order to make me feel better about keeping the schedule.

This is one of the greatest aspects of RSS feeds - as a consumer of web content I don’t have to remember who publishes new content on Thursdays and who does on Monday.  I just dial up my news aggregator and read the new stuff as it happens.

I’m just not convinced, in this day and age of information overload, that enough web users visit a certain site on a certain day because they know the site’s publishing schedule.  I could be wrong, but I’d expect more visitors to take advantage of RSS and email Newsletters to get notified of new content - it’s just less to remember.

Here on Boyink.com my server logs confirm this - the RSS feeds represent the bulk of the traffic to the site.

So tell me - do you visit any sites on particular days because you know there will be new content to read?

Can’t say I visit sites on certain days.

I just check the feed if it’s infrequently posted to.

If it’s frequently posted to I’ll just visit it and take my chances that there’s something new.
